By Fire and Sword
What is By Fire & Sword
Fire & Sword is a 17th-century wargame focused on the wars of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth with its neighbors. This unique historical game captures the spirit of the era and lets you reenact battles featuring Hussars, Swedish Reiters, Tatar units, and more.
Game and Model Scale
The miniatures are in 15mm scale, offering the perfect balance between detail and large-scale battles. Thanks to this, Fire & Sword allows you to stage epic battles without compromising the quality of the miniatures.
Theme
No other wargame focuses on this region and period like Fire & Sword. The Commonwealth and its numerous wars are at the heart of the action. On these battlefields, you will encounter formations such as the Hussars, Swedish Reiters, and Tatar units.
Historical Accuracy and Game Rules
The models and army lists reflect the characteristics of period armies. Deploying an elite unit like the Hussars is possible, but since they were a small fraction of the Commonwealth’s forces, you will need to build the rest of your army with other units. The miniatures are based on period engravings, illustrations, and preserved museum examples.
To maintain smooth gameplay, the game includes mechanical simplifications. This ensures playability, dynamic action, unique Fire & Sword elements, and the spirit of the era. The game performs equally well in casual sessions with friends or on tournament tables.
Key Features of Fire & Sword
- Orders System
Fire & Sword limits player omniscience using an orders system. Orders assigned to units define their stance and actions based on the last commands received from army leadership. Beware—you won’t always know your opponent’s orders! - Play with Unequal Forces
The mechanics allow battles where one side has a significant advantage in quantity and/or quality. Scenario systems, effects, and tricks help mitigate the opponent’s advantage and enable balanced battles, even if your army is weaker. The Recon system lets you maneuver the enemy before deployment.
