By the mid 17th century, the cossack style cavalry had evolved into a heavier type of formation. Cossack style cavalrymen started wearing armor and fought alongside the winged hussars as shock cavalry attacking an enemy's front line directly. They could also support winged hussars with their firepower. Pancerni cavalry attacked in close order, three ranks deep, with companions in the front rank and retainers behind them. Sometimes they also fought in Tatar style, that is in a single rank.
