Dragoons, just like soldat infantry, were a "new pattern" formation. In the mid 17th century, dragoons were infantry that rode onto the battlefield on horses but fought on foot. Dragoons were issued a firearm, usually a matchlock musket, a short pike, a saber and a horse. In some of the better dragoon units, men were also issued pistols. On the battlefield, dragoons fought in a way similar to soldat infantry; that is, with pikemen in the middle and musketeers on the flanks. When possible, dragoons also tried to make use of various obstacles or fortifications. Due to the plebeian nature of the formation, dragoons were also used for various engineering tasks.
