At the outbreak of the 1655 war the national reiters included four Swedish and three Finnish regiments. They were voluntary formations, soldiers serving there came predominantly from the province after which the regiment was named. The cavalrymen were equipped with backswords and a pair of pistols. It seems that they did not use armor during the campaign, preferring a leather jack. A cavalry helmet was mostly exchanged for a wide-brimmed hat. The national reiters companies usually fought in six ranks and doubled their density by forming three ranks in case of a charge. Even though the caracole was sometimes used, they favored melee, in which they engaged after shooting a volley with pistols (at about 50 meters from the enemy).
