Cossacks were known throughout Europe for their efficient infantry - tough, valiant and determined. Register Cossacks were individuals whose names were recorded on a list as providing military service to the King of Poland and Lithuania. Divided into territorial regiments, these Cossacks lived in towns and were paid for their military service. During Cossack's uprisings the registered infantry were the most important military formations within the rebel forces. Register moloitsy were usually armed with a saber and one or more firearm. Cossack infantry usually fought behind defensive obstacles such as a wagon train or earthworks. The Cossacks also made use of terrain such as a forest or a ditch, to improve their defenses and tried to avoid fighting in the open.
