Dragoons are essentially a mounted infantry. They used horses for mobility but on the battlefield they dismounted and fought as infantry. In the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth dragoons provided fire support for cavalry, and since they were able to ride, they could keep pace with the mounted noblemen. During battles, they usually were in the center, defending important terrain elements, assaulting fortified positions and performed various engineering tasks. Dragoons did not use any protective gear and their primary weapon was the matchlock musket. In addition, they were also armed with sabers and later they could have carried berdish axes.
