Deli were type of Ottoman light cavalry recruited from Bosniaks or Albanians. They served as the lifeguard of the Grand Vizier, and probably some of the pashas and beylerbeys, residing near the borders of Christendom. Deli used a wide range of weapons typical for Ottoman cavalry including lances, sabers, hammers, and swords. The lances were of Hungarian type, similar to those used by Polish winged hussars. They were valiant and usually started the battles by skirmishing, often while intoxicated. Deli operated in small groups or individually and did not form larger units.
