Until the 15th century the Turks were pioneers in the use of artillery on a large scale. Guns cast on site were the cause of the fall of many fortresses and were used in the capture of Constantinople. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ottomans continued to improve their artillery. Contrary to the common opinion on the conservatism of Islam, the Ottomans were able to quickly adopt new military ideas and their artillery technology kept pace with the European powers until the end of the 17th century. The Turks relied upon heavy siege guns and less attention was payed to smaller caliber field artillery. The basic problem of Ottoman artillery was the lack of gun standardization. In pitched battles, due to poor mobility and lack of cooperation with other units, their usefulness was limited but lack of effectiveness was made up for in numbers.
