The Muscovite nobility (boyars) service was either hereditary (po ochestvu) or on the tzar's appointment (po priboru). A nobleman was required to answer every call of the tzar, but the duration of his stint was dependent on the size of the fiefdom. Dvorians were well-dressed, equipped and mounted on excellent horses, armed with sabers, maces, spears, throwing spears, bows and long fi rearms. Armor was usually quite expensive and available only to the wealthiest nobles. The boyar cavalry wore a variety of armor, including chainmail and plate, but mail shirts, made in a variety of different ways, were the most common.
