In comparison to the noble cavalry this formation, based on the West European model, was of far better quality. Reiters were more disciplined, well equipped, better organized and trained. As the reiters were best of Muscovite cavalry, their numbers kept increasing. The reiters were armed with long firearms (muskets, arquebuses), a pair of pistols and a rapier or saber. As protection they wore steel helmets and breastplates. The Muscovite reiters were the main strike-force of the Muscovite cavalry. When facing formidable adversary, in the field, the Muscovite reiters often used defensive tactics and closely cooperated with their own infantry.
