Throughout the 17th century, not only did the proportion of pikemen in formations steadily decline, but it became increasingly common to dispense with pikemen altogether and form squadrons composed solely of musketeers. The equipment depended mainly on the provisions of the contract but also on which weapons the owner was able to secure for his unit and on the men he was able to recruit. Therefore, in addition to the most popular musket caliber of the period not exceeding 18mm, there were entire units armed with heavy 20 to 22mm caliber Spanish muskets, or short wheel-lock muskets.
