Tatar warriors were armed primarly with reflex bows, sabers and spears. The Tatar cavalry was very mobile and their tactics were based on surprise, speed, feigned retreat and quick withdrawals. Tatars were mainly a shooting cavalry but could also prove very dangerous in close combat. They were able to perfectly maneuver with massed cavalry and draw their enemies into ambushes in order to smash them with a surprise attack. They avoided confrontation with a stronger enemy, such as Polish winged hussars, or units with large amounts of firepower, such as "German" type infantry. The Tatar cavalry fought in a loose, wide formation and tried to outflank the enemy and attack him from the side. Instead of frontal charges they tried to maneuver and get into positions to strike from the side or back, preferably using surprise and all the time showering the enemy with arrows.
