Tatar cavalry units were levied and it was every warrior’s responsibility to equip and arm himself. The quality of the unit usually depended on the wealth and social status of its members. Only the Tatar elite, beys and mirzas, had elite cavalry units. These elite units were equipped with the best horses and its troopers often used decorative arms and armor. For protection the Tatar elite used both locally produced and imported chainmail, as well as all kinds of padded textile armor. Padded jackets offered less protection than chainmail but were lighter, allowed more freedom of movement, and were more comfortable. In terms of arms, the clan elders used similar types of weapons, but their arms were of better quality and they were often decorated.
