Zaporizhia Cossacks had been well known for their excellent infantry and the Cossack cavalry role was mainly to support the infantry. Therefore, the cavalry carried out typical tasks, such as reconnaissance, screening or pursuit. During the course of an engagement, Cossack cavalry usually fought dismounted within the defensive perimeter of a wagon train. At that period of time, Cossack cavalry was more similar to Polish dragoons than to Tatar cavalry which was supposed to be its precursor. Mounted Cossacks, being light cavalry, did not use any armor and their favorite weapons were sabers and various spears. They also used bows and firearms, such as arquebuses and early flintlock muskets.
