Cossacks who were not part of the register for any for any reason, such as those who lived at the Cossack Sich at Zaporizhia were known as moloitsy. The moloitsy had a fairly high combat value. This large group of Cossacks gained combat experience during pillaging raids into Turkish territories, skirmishing against the Tatars and fighting the Poles. The Cossacks used a wide range of arms, including sabers, pistols, spears, muskets and arquebuses. While undoubtedly some of these rifled firearms were initially used by nobles for hunting, the Cossacks had a long tradition of using the longer ranging rifles.
