The Swedish Army in By Fire and Sword means discipline, firepower and excellent commanders. Armies led into battle by Swedish generals are not particularly numerous, but they are excellently trained and motivated to fight. In Swedish doctrine, quality is much more important than quantity. In the ranks of the Swedish Army are fought by numerous mercenary units, composed of veterans who will execute orders with a clockwork precision.
Reiters developed in the 16th century in the northern German countries. Mercenary cavalry was equipped with pistols and swords, some units also in arquebuses. During the 17th century, armor slowly disappeared, but there were still units equipped with them. Despite, that caracol was still used, the most popular method of fighting was striving for close combat right after fi ring a volley from pistols.
Dragooned musketeers were a solution often used by the Swedes during campaigns in Poland. In the course of the conflict, especially during the Polish guerilla war, the role of dragoons was appreciated. The main advantage of dragoons was their mobility - it was able to keep up with cavalry on the march, and then dismount on the battlefield to provide fire support. During the campaign of 1657, Karl X Gustav suffered from a lack of dragoons and ordered some of his foot musketeers to mount in order to support the cavalry.
