The wagon train consisted of light peasant wagons that were formed into rows. The more wagons, and as a result rows, it had the better and more difficult to defeat it was. While fortified and set up in advantageous terrain it became a fortress. The wagon train was well-equipped, with firearms and artillery, especially of small caliber, that was located on the wagons and between them. This was supplemented by Cossack rabble armed with pole-arms. An attack against the wagon train, as well as fighting inside it in the tangle of wagons, always brought huge losses in men and horses to the attacker. "Mobile" wagon train was used as defensive weapon to protect franks from enemy cavalry or during the retreat. Cossacks were able to use it also offensively. For example, in 1651 Cossack infantry was able to move to the walls of Homel and fire at its defenders under the cover of wagons.
